About Yourself:

Hello UCSC! My name is Kayla Gomez and I am honored to serve as your Vice President of Internal Affairs for the 2021-2022 school year! A little bit about myself: I am a first generation college student originally from the Central Valley. I am a fourth year Politics major with a passion for human rights, communication and leadership. My college affiliation is Kresge and I have a special place in my heart for College 9 because I spent a lot of time there working and going to class.

Although I am new to the SUA space, I do have leadership experience from my active participation in organizations on campus such as those listed below. I was motivated to take on this role by my desire to decrease the barriers students face in accessing the resources they need to have an enriching college experience. Another motivation is to demonstrate that anyone can be involved in SUA, regardless of prior involvement.

Past Involvement:

I owe a huge thank you to organizations such as CALPIRG, Everett Program, (H)ACER Program and the Human Rights Investigations Lab for supporting my growth at UCSC and empowering me to take on leadership roles such as this one. If anyone would like to connect and ask about my experience with these communities or what they are about, feel free to reach out via email or by scheduling an appointment.

Office Initiatives:

Within my role as Vice President of Internal Affairs, I also serve as the Chair for Student Committee on Committees (SCOC). SCOC is an organization that helps connect students with advocacy opportunities by filling appointments for numerous committees and task forces on campus.

As Chair of SCOC, I aim to encourage more student participation in these advocacy opportunities by making the application and appointment process more accessible and informed.

Some of my goals this year include increasing our campus population's awareness of AND access to mental health and wellness resources, establishing better methods of communication between the SUA and the overall campus body, continuing to develop and improve the Off Campus Housing Legal Consultation Services and aiming to increase the retention and graduation rates on our campus by prioritizing the needs of our student populations facing basic needs insecurities.

If you are interested in learning more about ways to get involved, want to discuss an issue on campus, have a project you would like support with or would simply like to meet, please reach out via email suavpi@ucsc.edu or Instagram @ucsc_ivp.
