My name is Guillermo Rogel Jr. and I'm your External Vice President at UC Santa Cruz. I'm the son of two immigrants, born and raised in Riverside. I'm currently in my fourth year studying politics with an emphasis in International Relations. This will be my third year working in the office and I'm super excited to help the student body.
So. What does this office do? The Office of External Affairs is a team of students who advocate and fight for students at the city, state, and national level. Policies that are created at the UC Board of Regents, Office of the President, California State Legislature, and in Washington DC impact the future of our campus.
We are able to tackle these issues by collaborating with our state-wide partners the UC Student Association and our national partners the United States Student Association. Opportunities are available for students at each of these levels. You can serve as a representative or observer for several committees and give report backs that benefit the student movement. Check back here or on our Facebook for these opportunities. Applications for paid internships will be available in September.
This year the Office of External Affairs will be working on multiple issues and we need your help. In the past decade alone we have seen a shift in the quality and accessibility of the University of California system.Tuition is at an all time high. Class rooms are over crowded. Professors are working more for less in an effort to educate and guide the future of California. Sexual assaults and insufficient support systems are creating an unsafe environment for many of our students. Housing has become limited leading many students to seek expensive housing off-campus. In short, we face a host of issues.
As students we need to come together and work for the greater good. The work we do in this office will mean nothing without your support. I ask for you to step up and take action.
